Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff
John Mills
Al Gomez
In the mid-1990's, Kaz teamed up with Austin, Texas veteran
musicians, Gary Slechta (trumpet) and
John Mills
(saxophone), to form The Texas Horns. This trio, occasionally
augmented by Randy Zimmerman on trombone, has already made a name
for itself, both in live performances and in the recording studio.
In 2005 Gary left the group to pursue a new career in publishing and
working with his own compositions and arrangements. We hate to
see him go and he will be sorely missed, but we're also happy to
welcome Al Gomez.
Al is a
veteran of the Texas Blues, R+B and Jazz scene, and nationally known for his
performances with Doug Sahm, The Texas Tornados, Los Jazz Vatos, Randy
Garibay, Johnny Nicholas, and many other great artists. We will have
more info here soon about Al, including pictures and bio.
The Texas Horns have performed at the Ottawa Blues Festival for the
last 5 years. At the Ottawa Festival, The Texas Horns have become
the resident horn section, performing with many international and
local Canadian artists on the Festival Main Stage, as well as
conducting workshops on the Festival grounds.
The Texas Horns also toured for three years (1999-2001) with The
Lone Star Shootout (featuring Lonnie Brooks, Long
John Hunter, and Philip Walker), performing at major blues
festivals in the
U.S. and Europe.
John Mills:
John Mills is one
of central Texas' most in-demand saxophonists, arrangers, and
composers, covering a complete spectrum of musical styles -- jazz,
R&B, salsa, classical, rock 'n roll, world music, country, funk,
alternative, blues, folk, gospel, and more -- in concert and in the
recording studio. During his diverse professional career he has
performed, arranged, and composed on a vast number of CD's, film/TV
soundtracks, and jingles.
He is an also an
active educator, clinician and adjudicator. While Director of Jazz
Studies at Southwest Texas State University, his students won three
Downbeat Magazine awards and he designed a Bachelor's of Music
degree in Jazz Studies which is now fully approved by the Texas
governing board and enjoying success. Some of his former students
have toured with the jazz orchestras of Ray Charles, Harry Connick
Jr., and Maynard Ferguson.
John Mills' new CD
on 482 Records, Courage "The Way Out Is Via the Door," teams
him with legendary jazz bassist Steve Swallow and revered poet
Robert Creeley. This unique project showcases his compositions as
well as his improvisations on saxophones, flute, bass clarinet, and
textural keyboards.
